Employment figures are better news but we must not be complacent

Unemployment in Scotland fell by 5,000 - to 225,000 - between September and November 2010.

The Scottish unemployment rate is 8.4%, above the UK average unemployment rate of 7.9%.

Derek Brownlee MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Finance & Sustainable Growth, said:

"After a long run of disappointing figures before last month, this is once again better news, but we must not be complacent. There is still a pressing need for the Scottish and UK Governments to work together to help the private sector create new jobs.

"Scotland has relied too heavily on public sector employment in the past and it is time to focus on helping entrepreneurs build new businesses, and on supporting existing small businesses.

"The challenge for SNP Ministers is to focus on job creation in the private sector, rather than increasing taxes on major employers."
