Edinburgh tourist tax should be ditched

Edinburgh Council is to investigate the legality of a 'tourist tax'. The plans, which were voted against by Conservative Councillors, would see a levy charged of between £1 and £2 on visitor accommodation.

Scottish Conservative MSP for the Lothians, David McLetchie MSP said:

"This tourist tax is a dangerous and damaging proposal and the Conservative Councillors on the City Council have rightly voted against it. Local hotels and businesses will undoubtedly suffer as a result of this tax as they are either forced to take on the extra cost themselves or pass it on to the customer.

"During these tough economic conditions we must ensure that we do everything we can to attract tourists to Edinburgh as so we can help grow our local economy. This tax would make Edinburgh the only city in the UK to charge it and could have a hugely negative effect on tourism numbers.

"This idea should be ditched forthwith."
