Drink-drive fatalities both depressing and unacceptable

Transport Scotland has published a report detailing road accident and casualty statistics for Scotland in 2010. They showed that, although progress was made in several areas, young car drivers still account for 25% of reported and fatal accidents, and that 14% of all fatalities were estimated to be due to drink drive accidents.

Scottish Conservative Transport Spokesman, Jackson Carlaw MSP said:

"It is encouraging that overall progress has been made in reducing road casualties, but surely the fact that 14% of motor accident fatalities are still the result of alcohol is both depressing and unacceptable.

"While many younger drivers are responsible and exercise all due care, inexperience behind the wheel is still taking its toll. We should applaud the fact that the motor industry has invested in safer vehicles but we need to do more to keep younger drivers safe.

"Scottish Conservatives support the much wider installation of operational speed inhibitors in vehicles driven by newly qualified younger drivers – not because we wish to brand them as irresponsible drivers but because we need to do all we can to prevent them from becoming road fatality statistics."
