Common Sense to grow our economy: Scottish Conservatives want dedicated Cabinet-level posts

Scottish Conservatives want two dedicated Cabinet-level Ministers to help grow Scotland's economy.

Speaking outside St Andrew's House in Edinburgh, Gavin Brown, Scottish Conservative Enterprise Spokesperson, said:

"To grow Scotland's economy we need to grow the private sector, where the jobs of the future will come from.

"We need to put our faith in our entrepreneurs so we nurture new businesses, design new products and create new jobs. That is why we have said we will create a £154m Scottish Business Start Up Fund to support individuals access enterprise education, vocational training, and to provide grants and loans to assist in the creation of new businesses.

"We also want to make it compulsory for colleges and universities to offer enterprise training and for 25% of local and national government contracts to be awarded to small and medium sized enterprises.

"Reform will be delivered best if Government plays it part. To achieve our radical ambitions for growth, it is clear that politicians must work together, work in partnership with the private sector, and do everything they can to unite all tiers of government behind the push for growth.

"We will create a new Cabinet level position of Minister for Finance and Reform, replacing the existing Finance and Sustainable Growth portfolio, and provide a dedicated member of Cabinet with responsibility for decisions on taxation and spending, and for driving public sector reform.

"We will also create a new dedicated Cabinet level Minister for Enterprise and Jobs, taking responsibility for Enterprise, Planning, Transport and Infrastructure. This post will replace the two existing junior ministerial posts.

"These measures would be a step towards creating a dynamic Scottish economy. Every voter in every seat in every region of Scotland can vote for these common sense policies on May 5th."
