Clear choice for Councils: Pay restraint or thousands more job losses

A poll conducted by Grant Thornton, which surveyed 39 chief executives and finance directors across Scotland's 32 local authorities, has revealed the projected job losses across the Councils over the next two years

Derek Brownlee MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Finance & Sustainable Growth, says:

"To deal with the dire legacy of debt left by Labour, there is a straight choice in front of our Councils and Council workers - either have a pay freeze or lose more jobs. Which would the Unions prefer? Pay restraint or thousands more job losses?"

The poll by Grant Thornton surveyed 39 chief executives and finance directors across Scotland's 32 local authorities.

When asked which services they expected to reduce most, 46% named environment and transport followed by 31% who said education and learning.

The survey found that 51% of council chiefs feared spending cuts would lead to job losses of between six and 10 per cent - equating from 13,200 up to 22,000.
