With Cosla predicting that local authorities will need additional financial help in order to deal with the £100m bill for road repairs, John Swinney has arranged a meeting with Cosla this afternoon.
Jackson Carlaw MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Transport said:
"I welcome the news that Mr. Swinney will be meeting Cosla this afternoon to discuss the urgent matter of funding for the repair of Scotland's severely damaged roads.
"As the recent snow and ice melted the true extent of the damage done was revealed to Scottish drivers, now forced to travel on roads in an appalling condition. The short-term thinking and quick fixes implemented by local authorities over the last decade have resulted in Scotland being left with a road network that is utterly unfit for purpose.
"Any extra investment by the Scottish Government in these repairs will need to be matched by a re-evaluation by local authorities as to where road maintenance lies in their list of priorities. If not we will see a repeat of these avoidable costs in winters to come."
