Scottish Conservatives are calling on any change in bus lane regulations to allow cars with multiple occupancy to use the lanes as well.
Transport Scotland has confirmed it is working on draft legislation which could grant local authorities powers to enforce bus lane restrictions.
Jackson Carlaw MSP, Scottish Conservative Transport Spokesperson, said:
"Councils stand to gain financially from this move, which could be a welcome ease on local government spending pressures. However, we would hope it would also be possible to introduce a policy which allowed cars with multiple occupancy to use the lanes too, thus reducing congestion.
"Rather than merely find ways of fleecing motorists, this would be one way of both enforcing bus lanes but also opening access to those seeking to reduce general congestion by sharing cars."
