John Swinney has announced that he will be making an additional £15 million available to local authorities; to help them deal with the problems caused by the recent severe weather.
Jackson Carlaw MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Transport said:
"Motorists will be relieved that Mr. Swinney's discussion with Cosla over the last few days has resulted in a productive outcome. The severe weather has left some of Scotland's roads, already in a poor state of repair, poorer still and in some cases dangerous. This extra investment will help in part to restore them to a viable condition at least in the short term.
"However, this recent severe weather has served only to exacerbate the more serious problem of continued underinvestment in the repair and maintenance of local roads by many councils.
"This extra investment from the Scottish Government needs to be matched by a revaluation of spending priorities by local authorities. They need to ensure that they place the same value on the condition of our roads as council tax payers, for whom the all too familiar evidence of widespread deterioration and the hazard of potholes continue to be a major concern."
