Annual brinkmanship on fisheries must end

Fishing fleets in Scotland are set to be allowed larger catch quotas, but fewer days at sea after fisheries negotiations in Brussels were concluded last night.

Leader of the Scottish Conservatives, Ruth Davidson said:

"The UK and the Scottish Government have worked together to achieve this deal and I am pleased that it has led to larger fishing quotas being granted. However, it is deeply frustrating that the European Commission's intransigence has led to our fisherman being permitted fewer days at sea.

"The now annual brinkmanship when it comes to these deals is ludicrous and we can only hope that the total overhaul of the Common Fisheries Policy will end the uncertainty - hugely damaging to the industry - that is the result of the current system."
