Annabel Goldie congratulates Ruth Davidson on being elected as leader of the Scottish Conservatives

Annabel Goldie has congratulated Ruth Davidson on being elected as the new leader of the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.

Upon hearing the result of the leadership contest, Annabel Goldie said:

"I warmly congratulate Ruth Davidson on being elected as the new leader of the Scottish Conservative Party. This election marks a key point in the history of the party. Ruth now has a mandate from our members to be leader of not just the MSP group, but of the whole party. She will benefit hugely from both these new powers and that stature.

"I pay a warm tribute to the other candidates who have delivered genuine debate to party members and worked so hard to do that.

"The last few weeks have seen a keenly and tightly fought contest that has informed, provided choice and invigorated our membership. The hustings were well attended and attracted lively debate about the future of our party. It is important that as Scottish Conservatives we now unite behind Ruth, show our full support for her and go forward as a united, purposeful political force.

"We are at a crucial point in Scottish politics. We have a huge responsibility to hold the SNP to account and fight off their plan for separation. We face Council Elections in six months time with important choices to be made.

"We have a big obligation to our own party but we have an even bigger one to the Scottish public. I wish Ruth every success in taking the Scottish Conservatives forward. The future is exciting, I promise her that I shall not be a back seat driver and I am confident that she is more than equal to taking on Alex Salmond."
