Accounts Commission report into SPT: These revelations must become a thing of the past

In a damning report, the Accounts Commission has found "serious deficiencies" in the way that Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) managed and controlled travel expenses.

Jackson Carlaw MSP, Shadow Minister for Transport, said:

"Labour's debt legacy has made the need for careful use of public money even greater. The Scottish taxpayer has been taken for a ride, as the full scale of SPT's former profligacy, and jobs for the boys culture, has become clear over the course of this year. Everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves for treating the taxpayer with such disrespect.

"Scottish Conservatives have forced this SNP Government to adopt tough new rules for Scotland's public bodies to prevent such disgraceful actions happening again.

"All spending over £25,000 - excluding salaries – are now being automatically published on-line. The public will also have a right to see all spending on communications and special advisers, advertising and sponsorship, all overseas travel costs as well as all hospitality and entertainment payments.

"These SPT revelations, which have been dragged out since February this year, must become a thing of the past
