There needs to be a full inquiry into how beef from cloned bulls and milk from cloned dairy cattle entered the food supply chain.
John Scott MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs & the Environment, says:
"Whilst it seems unlikely that the consumption of milk and beef from the progeny of cloned cattle will have any effect on human health, the Scottish Government should none the less instigate a full and comprehensive inquiry into why this breach of regulation occurred. In particular we need to know how the meat from these animals was able to enter the food chain and how the Food Standards Agency allowed this to happen.
"The Food Standards Agency, as custodians of our food supply, must be constantly vigilant and aware of the real and potential threats to our food supply. If cloned beef can find its way into our food supply when regulations suggest it should not have then we need to know if other unauthorised food products also being illegally placed in the food chain.
"That is why I am calling on the Scottish Government to carry out a full and comprehensive inquiry into this matter."
John Scott has today tabled the following written parliamentary questions:
To ask the Scottish Executive how many cloned (a) sheep and (b) cattle have entered the human food chain in Scotland.
To ask the Scottish Executive whether milk from cloned dairy cattle is entering the human food chain and, if so, whether authorisation is required for this
