Scottish Conservatives have welcomed today's launch of a new green scheme that recycles food waste, but have warned the SNP Government must not go down the route of financially punishing households that do not participate in recycling.
John Scott MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs & the Environment, says:
"The Commercial Food Waste Collection Service is a welcome initiative and a good step along the road towards tackling the problem of food waste.
"There is no doubt that further steps need to be taken to increase recycling and to tackle food waste but Scottish Conservatives do not believe that imposing still further financial penalties on already hard-pressed Council Tax payers is the right way to go about it. The SNP Government must not go down a route it appears to be considering.
"Instead we should be looking much more at ways to positively encourage recycling and by examining pilots like the one run by Maidenhead and Windsor Council where financial incentives are offered to residents to maximise recycling."
