Peter Duncan - Our Westminster Candidate

In a bakeryI’ve always taken the view that politics is about community service, and it is serving my community that is my first priority.

Between 2001 and 2005, I was proud to be the Member of Parliament for Galloway & Upper Nithsdale constituency, where I was honoured to have the responsibility of putting forward the priorities of that constituency in the House of Commons. During my time there, I had the opportunity to take the concerns of constituents to the floor of Parliament on issues as diverse as the closure of rural post offices to the old age pension; from leading the campaign to save the local regiment to fighting red tape burdens on business. Between 2003 and 2005, I was Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland and in 2004 was appointed Chairman of the Scottish Conservative Party.

Peter in a garden centreWhen parliamentary boundaries changed in 2005, I unsuccessfully contested the new seat of Dumfries & Galloway, but in May 2007 was elected to Dumfries & Galloway Council as councillor for Castle Douglas & Glenkens ward. I was appointed by the council as Chairman of its Resources Committee.

I live in Dalbeattie and am married to Lorna, and we have two children. I used to have lots of outside interests, but now find that running “Dad’s taxi” takes most of my limited free time. I’m trying hard to hold on to my sporting loves, being Scottish rugby and cricket.

Peter in an old folk's homePrior to entering Parliament in 2001, I was business consultant and ran my long established small family textiles business. I’m still completely committed to building the strongest foundations for the success of our area, by seeing our local small businesses flourish. My outside experience has been a vital part of making me who I am, determined to deliver for local people.
