Buy Local Eat Local

Scottish Conservatives are working for a Scotland that is greener, healthier and which supports small businesses and jobs in communities across our country.

Scottish Conservatives believe in social responsibility. We believe that government has a role to play in tackling the big issues facing us, but that as individuals the choices we make are the real power for change.

Choosing fresh, locally-produced food is one way in which each of us can help shape a better future for our country.  Local food is environmentally friendly, healthy and supports local businesses and jobs.

Local food is greener: Transporting food over long distances leads to unnecessary carbon emissions and contributes to global warming.  Buying locally-produced food helps our environment by cutting down on 'food miles' and reducing our carbon footprint.

Local food is healthier: Locally-produced food is likely to be fresher, healthier and have higher vitamin levels.  Buying local and eating local can help ensure a healthy diet and a better quality of life.

Local food supports local jobs: Local food is most often produced by small, locally-owned businesses, employing local people.  By buying local, you can help support local businesses and employment.

Local food helps restore trust in food production:  Consumers are rightly concerned about ensuring high standards of animal welfare.  Buying local food allows consumers to know exactly how the food they are eating has been produced, and where it has come from.

Buying local food brings benefits to both consumers and producers, as well as to the economy and the environment.

Scottish Conservatives support all organisations promoting the use of local food. We will continue to campaign for such measures as honest food labelling, less red tape and steps to make it easier for public agencies to procure locally-produced food.

Take the pledge and back our campaign for Scottish food and Scottish farming.
