Health statistics out today show that hundreds of thousands of bed days are still being occupied thanks to bed blocking. In total 126,531 bed days were taken up by delayed discharge patients in the last quarter – which is higher than the same quarter of last year and the previous three months.

Scottish Conservative Health Spokesman, Jackson Carlaw MSP, said:

“Once again we have seen a rise in bed blocking in our NHS.  Over 125,000 bed days have been lost in the last three months simply because we could not discharge patients.

“The situation is getting worse and is proof it were needed that the SNP are totally failing to deal with this problem.

“With winter now upon us wards up and down the country will be under a huge amount of pressure, and having patients who are taking up beds despite being fit to leave is an issue that they could do without.”

“While Nicola Sturgeon has gone off to concentrate on the SNP’s separatist agenda she has left behind an NHS that is failing patients. The SNP need to get their priorities straight to free up beds and help these vulnerable patients.”
