Thousands of students yet to receive loan payments

31 Oct 2012

Thousands of students across Scotland are still waiting for loan and bursaries to be paid, months after their courses started, it was reported today.

Around 7500 applications are still to be processed, leaving students potentially out of pocket for food and study materials.

Scottish Conservative education spokeswoman Liz Smith MSP said:

“This is a totally unacceptable situation and the Scottish Government must provide a full explanation of why there has been so much confusion and inefficiency within SAAS.

“Eight weeks into term is a very long time without the financial support and, worse still, it appears there have been delayed responses to all those students who have been seeking answers about their due payments.

“I have today written to the Cabinet Secretary to ask him to provide an explanation.

“This is a Scottish Government which made a promise to maintain student support and eradicate student debt but this situation makes a mockery of that.”
