SNP has more than enough powers to influence growth

28 Aug 2012

The Scottish Government should concentrate on the powers it already has to improve growth in Scotland, a report has suggested.

In a submission to the Scottish Parliament, CBI Scotland said the SNP could have a more positive impact on the economy by using devolved powers and being more bold with its policies.

The organisation also urged the Scottish Government to reconsider its plans to reduce rates relief for businesses with empty properties.

Scottish Conservative MSP and convener of the economy committee Murdo Fraser said:

“It’s easy for the SNP to blame Westminster whenever anything goes wrong, but that is simply an attempt to cover up its own shortcomings.

“As the CBI suggests, the Scottish Government has more than enough powers to make a positive difference to the business sector in Scotland.

“It hasn’t been scared to use that power to introduce its Scotland-only retail levy or increase tax on empty properties.

“But when it comes to making a useful contribution, the SNP has been noticeably silent.”
