Latest SNP Nato dispute shows weakness on defence

7 Aug 2012

The youth wing of the SNP has said it will object to any move by the party to drop its opposition to Nato.

The longstanding, controversial policy will be discussed at the party’s conference later this year, but the SNP’s youngest members want to continue the opposition.

Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson MSP said:

“The SNP’s derided opposition to Nato may be one of its oldest policies, but it seems like it is being fully embraced by the separatist new blood as well.

“The first responsibility of government is the defence of the nation.

“It is clear from this ongoing dispute within the SNP ranks that they want to take decisions of defence for political reasons, not military ones.

“That is a disgraceful situation and undermines the safety and professionalism of our servicemen and women.

“The SNP is clueless on defence and this Nato row shows that, to them, it is no more than a political football.”
