Gardens decision a slap in the face

22 Aug 2012

Reacting to news that Aberdeen City Council has rejected plans to revolutionise Union Terrace Gardens, Scottish Conservative North East MSP Alex Johnstone said:

“This is a slap in the face to a local philanthropist who wanted to invest in his home city.

“With £50 million on the table and more to follow, the council has looked a gift horse in the mouth.

“They will live to regret this decision for years to come.”

Scottish Conservative group secretary in Aberdeen, Cllr Ross Thomson, added:

“We are bitterly disappointed with this decision and it is a blow for democracy.

“More than 86,000 people turned out to vote in the referendum, where-as only 55,000 did for the local elections.

“As a result, we believe that vote had great legitimacy and the people of Aberdeen made their views clear.

“Today that has been overturned.

“We also believe this will mean no bid is put forward for Aberdeen being the City of Culture in 2017 as this plan was intrinsic to that bid.”
