Virgin Atlantic has signalled its intention to bid for air travel routes from Edinburgh and Aberdeen to London Heathrow.
It comes a week after Virgin lost out on the bid for the West Coast Mainline connecting London with the west of Scotland.
Scottish Conservative transport spokesman Alex Johnstone MSP said:
“I think competition is a wonderful thing for passengers.
“That is particularly true at a time when Virgin have lost out on the West Coast Mainline, and I would be delighted to see them being successful in bidding for domestic routes so they could compete in the airline market between Scotland and London.
“There is a certain irony that when we are trying to force passengers out of the skies and onto the railways Virgin should be moving in the other direction.
“This is where the challenge will lie, and if rail franchises do not make train travel more attractive for passengers, Virgin could still end up being the beneficiaries of all this.”
