A major transfer of powers from Westminster to the Scottish Parliament comes into effect today.
Holyrood now has control of drink drive and speed limits, along with the control of airguns, following the recent passing of the Scotland Bill.
The legislation, which will eventually see the largest transfer of fiscal powers to the Scottish Parliament for 300 years, will give MSPs the ability to set rates of income tax from 2016 onwards.
Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson MSP said:
“We welcome the transferal of these non-financial powers today, which will have a huge impact on areas such as motoring and firearms.
“It’s worth remembering that far greater powers are on the way, including the largest transfer of fiscal powers for 300 years.
“My challenge to the SNP is to use these powers to reduce the tax burden on Scots rather than continue the trend of creating new Scotland-only taxation.”
