The Scottish Conservatives are urging ministers to make every effort possible to keep one of the country’s largest meat factories open.
Vion Food UK, which owns Hall’s of Broxburn in West Lothian, today announced the site could be forced to close with the loss of more than 1,700 people.
Commenting, Scottish Conservative MSPĀ Murdo Fraser, convener of Holyrood’s economy committee, said:
“It is worrying news that Vion may close its West Lothian plant with the loss of 1,700 jobs.
“This news is a massive blow to the staff of the plant, to the Scottish economy and to the Scottish pork industry.
“It is vital that Vion keep all employees fully involved in discussions at all times as there are hundreds of families affected by this news.
“I hope that the Scottish Government will do all that they can to keep the plant open, including helping to find a buyer for the business if appropriate.”
