Megrahi and family paid millions in hush money

15 Jul 2012

It was reported this morning that Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset al-Megrahi and his family were paid £15 million in hush money by former Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi.

In addition, it was disclosed that Gaddafi ordered Megrahi to drop his appeal over the conviction.

The details emerged in an interview with the head of the Libyan Government Mustafa Abdul Jalil.

Scottish Conservative deputy leader Jackson Carlaw said:

“Megrahi may now be dead but the questions surrounding the circumstances of his release continue.

“If true, this murky revelation shows that by releasing Megrahi the SNP, however inadvertently, helped to finesse hush money worth millions to Megrahi’s family.

“This will surely dismay all the Lockerbie victims’ families.”
