SNP slammed for university fees shambles

The Scottish Conservatives have asked education secretary Mike Russell to make an urgent statement to clear up a row over university fees.

In a letter to Mr Russell, Scottish Conservative education spokeswoman Liz Smith said there were concerns across the board about who qualified for free tuition in Scotland, and who did not.

It comes after it emerged earlier this month that some sixth-form pupils in Northern Ireland would be entitled to free tuition if they had an Irish passport.

Scottish Conservative education spokeswoman Liz Smith MSP said:

“There have been growing concerns and confusion about who is eligible to have their fees paid for by the Scottish taxpayer, and who is not.

“Mike Russell must clarify this situation urgently in his role as education secretary, it clearly cannot be allowed to continue any longer.

“There are considerable implications amid this confusion both for the student body and the public purse and the Scottish Government has been sending mixed messages.

“The public and the parliament need to know what the Scottish Government’s position on this is.”
