It was reported today that a fifth of university applicants from Northern Ireland to a Scottish university are claiming Irish citizenship to avoid paying fees.
Until now Education Secretary Mike Russell has said there is no evidence of this loophole being a risk.
But today it emerged this was happening in hundreds of cases at Dundee University.
Scottish Conservative Education Spokeswoman Liz Smith MSP said:
“Fees from students across the UK provide significant revenue, and the SNP has not been clear on how this shortfall can be made up.
“Aside from that, it is discriminatory.
“I have written to Mike Russell about this, because he has a responsibility to put in front of parliament exactly what the policy is and explain the criteria for tuition fees.
“This issue has to be cleared up urgently, and Mr Russell can no longer use the defence that there is no evidence of this happening.”
